Energy Conservation – Be Energy Conscious…

With the oil prices rising, we need to conserve energy on campus. The University burns #2 oil to produce electrical power for the campus. The price of #2 oil has risen from $2.05/gallon in September 2007 to $3.32/gallon in March 2008 which is a 62% increase in costs. A truck load of oil in September cost $19,000 and our last load in March was $31,000.

PSU to Study Feasibility of Co-Generation Plant, Switching from Fossil Fuel to Wood Could Save Money, Reduce Pollution

The Center for Rural Partnerships (CRP), working in collaboration with North Country Resource Conservation and Development Area Council (RC & D) and the State Forester, has secured funding from the U.S. Forest Service to conduct a feasibility study for converting PSU’s existing co-gen plant from fossil fuels to sustainably-harvested woody biomass from local forests. Conversion from fossil fuels to a renewable energy source (combined with sustainable forestry) has a number of positive attributes, according to CRP Director Thad Guldbrandsen. (more…)

Mary Lyon Hall - Back to the Future, Saving Money and Energy

PSU officially reopened Mary Lyon residence hall in mid-October after a $15 million, year-long renovation. How is it different? A 90 year-old building that was looking and feeling its age has been transformed into a beautiful, energy efficient home to 250 students that’s 40 to 50% more energy efficient than “Old Mary Lyon.”

University System of New Hampshire Colleges and Universities Join National Effort in Pursuit of Climate Neutrality

All four presidents will develop action plans and goals to become climate neutral

Lee, NH– While the University System of New Hampshire (USNH) institutions have a long history of pursuing efforts to be more energy conscious and efficient, the four USNH presidents took a major step toward climate neutrality by recently signing the national American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment. New Hampshire is one of the first states nationally to have all of its university system presidents support this effort. Nationally, nearly 300 presidents have signed the commitment, which calls for all institutions to create a comprehensive action plan for becoming neutral, including specific goals and timelines. PSU Residence Hall is First in NH to Strike LEED Gold: Langdon Woods Helps Establish University as Environmental Sustainability Leader

PLYMOUTH, N.H. — Plymouth State University’s newest building, Langdon Woods, is the state’s first residence hall—and one of the nation’s largest—to earn gold-level certification by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership-Energy-Environmental Design (LEED) program University President Sara Jayne Steen announced today.

“Receiving the USGB gold LEED certification symbolizes the commitment we have as a University to developing an environmentally sustainable plan that will have a positive effect for many, many years,” said Steen. “We are developing our students’ life skills as they learn to live in an environmentally sustainable community.”

PSU Joins Presidents Climate Commitment Initiative

University Takes Lead in Creating Environmentally-Conscious Campus PLYMOUTH, N.H. — Plymouth State University is taking a leadership role among the nation’s most environmentally friendly institutions of higher learning. PSU President Dr. Sara Jayne Steen has signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, committing PSU to a broad effort by the nation’s higher education institutions to address global warming by neutralizing their greenhouse gas emissions and accelerating research and educational efforts to equip society to re-stabilize the earth’s climate. The heads of more than 180 institutions across the country have signed the pledge.
